Introduction
Your computer is connected to a Wi-Fi network, but you cannot remember the password you have previously used to connect to this WiFi network. Perhaps you have forgotten the password or maybe the network administrator entered it directly without revealing the current password.
You now want to connect a second device such as your mobile phone to the same WiFi network but you are confused on how can you find the password? You can either ask for a password by asking the WiFi administrator or you can open the command prompt on your computer and recover the saved password in one easy step. The technique works on both Mac and Windows computers.
It is very easy to find the WiFi password using some cmd commands. This command works even when you are offline or connected to another WiFi network. With this command, we can further optimize our particular WiFi network, for example by enabling certain features such as changing the channel type of your WiFi, etc.
In this tutorial we will show you how to find the wifi password on Windows.
Steps to follow
When we select a Wi - Fi network and enter the password to connect to that network, we create a WLAN profile of that WiFi network. This profile is stored inside our computer with the other required details of the WiFi profile.
Instead of using a graphical user interface to find individual passwords, we can search for the WiFi password of that particular WiFi network using cmd. These steps work even when you are completely disconnected or not connected to the Wi-Fi network for which you are searching for the password.
How to know the WiFi password using cmd:
1. Open the command prompt and run it as an administrator. Or Type "cmd" in the search box, right-click the command prompt icon, and choose Run as administrator
2. Now enter the following command and press Enter to see the WiFi password.
netsh wlan show name profile = labnol key = clear
Note: Remember to replace labnol with the name of your wireless SSID (this is the name of the Wi-Fi network to which you are connecting your computer).
3. The password will appear in the Security Settings section.
4. In the next step, we want to know all the profiles saved in our computer. So, type the following command in the cmd:
netsh wlan show profile
This command will display all WiFi profiles you have already connected to.
As you can see, in the above screenshot there are 2 WiFi networks I connect to.
