Introduction

The Autumn Creator Update includes a new OneDrive feature called "On-Demand Files", in which your PC now displays "dummy" copies of your OneDrive files. This feature allows users to more easily manage the files and folders that are in Explorer's OneDrive folder.

This is essentially the file function built into , but better and without the compatibility issues that led Microsoft Windows 8.1 to delete it. Dropbox and Google Drive are also deploying similar features.

Steps to follow

How to activate Files on demand

OneDrive now seems to automatically activate this feature.
1- Log in to OneDrive with your Microsoft account. If you log on to your computer with your Microsoft account, you will be automatically logged in. If this is not the case, you must launch the OneDrive application from your notification area (a cloud icon) and log in.

2- Right-click on the OneDrive cloud icon in the Windows 10 notification area

3- Then, click on "Settings".

4- On the Settings tab, verify that "Files On-demand" is enabled.

5- If this is not the case, download the latest version of OneDrive from Microsoft. You have to have the Windows 10 Preview 16215 version.

6- At the end of the process a window offers to activate it directly.

How to choose the files available on demand

OneDrive does not necessarily display all your files and folders in File Explorer. To choose which one to display,
1. Click the "Account" tab in the OneDrive Settings window and click on the "Choose Folders" option.

2. You can check the "Make all files available" box and all your OneDrive folders will be visible in File Explorer. If you wish, you can uncheck the folders here to hide them in the File Explorer. They will not appear in your computer's File Explorer, but they will be available online in your OneDrive storage.

How to view which files are online and which are offline

All of your OneDrive files will now appear in the File Explorer. Open "File Explorer", select "OneDrive", and you can browse among all the files that are stored in OneDrive.
There is a new "Status" column that only appears in the OneDrive folder. This indicates the status of your files and folders, whether they are "Available online" (the cloud icon), "Available on this device" (green check mark) or "Synchronization" (blue refresh icon or progression). You can also hover over these icons to see a tooltip explaining what they mean.

To open a file, double-click it or access it normally in any application. Windows will download it automatically and it will open. As long as you have an Internet connection, you do not have to worry about the location of the file. Of course, very large files may take a long time to download, depending on the speed of your connection.
Windows presents these dummy files to applications as normal files, so they must work with each application. Even if you access a file from your OneDrive with a command line tool, the tool will be able to find that file and Windows will immediately start the download.
