Introduction

Microsoft always offers the 32-bit version of Windows 10 if you are upgrading from the 32-bit version of Windows 7 or 8.1. However, it is possible to upgrade to the 64-bit version, provided your hardware supports it.

Why upgrade Windows 10 to 64-bit? The 64-bit version allows you to use more than 3.75 GB of RAM, giving you a faster Windows 10 experience.

In addition, Windows 10 64-bit requires NX support as standard, giving your processor another layer of protection against malicious attacks.

64-bit migration steps

1. Before you begin the upgrade, you must make sure that your system architecture is 64-bit compatible.

2. Go to Settings >> System >> System Information

3. This screen contains your system type. If you see "32-bit operating system, x64 processor", as in the image below, you can complete the upgrade. If it says "32-bit operating system, x86 processor", you have a 32-bit processor, which means you will not be able to upgrade.

4. Before migrating a 32-bit Windows 10 PC to Windows 10 64-bit, it is necessary to back up all your personal files, settings and PC software in Windows 10 x86 32bits on an external support such as an external hard disk, a USB stick, a disk or a secondary partition.

5. Insert the USB key that will be used to copy the installation of Windows 10 to 64bit. This one will be formatted, the present files will be thus erased.

6. Download the Media Creation Tool from the following link

7. Run the tool, then select "Create an installation media for another PC"

12. When prompted to insert a product key, type it and continue.

13. After reaching the desktop, Windows 10 will automatically check with Microsoft and activate itself.

You will now run the 64-bit edition of Windows 10 on your PC.
