Introduction
If you need to repair Windows 10, reset the operating system, restore from a backup file, or boot into safe mode, you must access the Advanced Boot Options menu.
Windows 8 and 10 bundle their startup options into a single screen named the "Advanced Options" menu. This menu provides access to repair tools and options for modifying Windows start-up behaviour, such as enabling debugging, booting into safe mode, and launching in a recovery environment.
From there, you can access Windows diagnostic and repair tools such as Start-up Repair, System Recovery, Command Prompt, Reset this PC, and more.
Advanced Boot Options allows you to do the following:
• Access UEFI firmware from PC
• Choose the default operating system to boot to PC if multiple operating systems are installed
• Start recovery (aka: Windows RE or WinRE), troubleshooting, and diagnostic tools.
• Start from a disc (e.g. USB or DVD) or a device (UEFI only)
• Restore Windows from a system image
Methods to launch the advanced boot options mode
Usually the Advanced Boot Options menu should appear automatically after two consecutive boot errors. However, if you have to open it manually, there are several different ways to do it.
Method 1: Shift + Restart
1. Click the power button icon in the lower right corner.
2. Hold down the Shift key and click Restart.
3. Click Troubleshoot on the screen that appears to display the "Advanced Options" menu.
Note: This method does not seem to work with the on-screen keyboard. You must have a physical keyboard connected to your computer or device to open the Advanced Boot Options menu this way.
Method 2: Use the Settings Menu
1. Go to Settings
2. Click Update and Security.
3. Select Recovery from the menu.
4. Next, click Restart Now.
5. The computer will restart and display a menu of options.
6. Click Troubleshoot
7. Then, click Advanced Options.
Method 3: From a Windows 10 USB or DVD Installation Media
1. Start from your Windows 10 installation media created from a Windows 10 ISO file.
2. Select your language preferences and click Next.
3. Next, click Repair Computer at the bottom of the window.
Method 4: Start Advanced Boot Options from the Command Prompt
1. Open a command prompt or the Run dialog box (Win + R).
2. Type the command below and press Enter.
shutdown / r / o / f / t 00
