Introduction
Since Windows 8, Microsoft has brought novelties to the startup experience. The simple text-based startup loader has been replaced by a user-friendly graphical interface with icons and text. Windows 10 also has this interface.
If you have installed multiple operating systems on your PC, the Choose Operating System (Windows Boot Manager) screen appears on startup, with the name (description) of each operating system installed on your computer.
This tutorial will show you how to change the name of an operating system listed on the Choose Operating System screen when Windows 10 starts.
Steps to change the name of the operating system in Windows 10
You must be logged in as an administrator to change the name of an operating system.
1. Open a command prompt window.
2. Type the bcdedit command in the command prompt and press Enter.
3. This will show you all your operating systems that are displayed in the Windows 10 boot menu:
4. Under each Windows Boot Loader section, look for the description of the operating system (ex: Windows 10) whose name you want to change, and write down its identifier (eg, {current}). (see screenshot below)
5. Type the command below in the command prompt and press Enter. (see screenshot below)
bcdedit / set {identifier} description "new name"
Note:
Replace Identifier in the above command with the actual identifier (ex: {current}) from step 3 of the OS (ex: Windows 10) that you would like to rename.
Replace the new name in the command above with the description (ex: Windows 10 Pro) that you wish to give as a name for the operating system.
For example: bcdedit / set {current} description "Windows 10 Pro"
6. When you finish, you can close the command prompt.
7. To check your changes, you can run bcdedit again without parameters or restart Windows 10 to check your start menu in action.
