Introduction:

How do I know if a disc is an SSD or a hard drive? Is there a way to check if I have an SSD or hard drive without having to open the laptop itself to see what's inside?

When you buy a new computer without hardware documentation, you may want to find out what type of drive you want without opening it.

How to know the type of hard disk in Windows 10

Here are 2 easy methods to find if your hard drive is SSD or HDD in Windows 10/8/7, without using third-party software.

Method 1: Find out if your drive is SSD or hard disk using Disk Defragmenter

Just press the Windows key + R shortcut key to open the Run dialog box, type dfrgui and press Enter.

dfrgui

When the Disk Defragmenter window is displayed, look for the Media Type column and you can determine which drive is SSD (Solid State Drive) and which drive is the hard disk (HDD).

Method 2: Find out if your drive is SSD or HDD using PowerShell

Open the PowerShell as an administrator and type the following command and press Enter:
      Get-PhysicalDisk

get-physical-drive

The command will list all the physical disks connected to your computer. The MediaType setting can help you identify the type of your disk drive, hard drive, or SSD.
