Introduction:

The file history periodically backs up the versions of your files to the Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, and Desktop folders and OneDrive files available offline on your PC. Over time, you will have a complete history of your files. If the originals are lost, damaged, or deleted, you can restore them. You can also browse and restore different versions of your files. For example, if you want to restore an old version of a file (even if it was not deleted or lost), you can browse a timeline, select the desired version, and restore it.

The file history only backs up copies of the files in the Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, and Desktop folders and OneDrive files available offline on your PC. If you have files or folders that you want to back up, you can add them to one of these folders.

Before you start using file history to back up your files, you must first select where your files are saved. You can select a connected external drive, such as a USB drive, or you can register to a drive on a network. There are other choices, but these provide the best options to help protect your files from crash or other PC problems.

To configure a drive for file history

If you are using a new external drive, connect it to your PC. If you see a notification asking if you want to configure the drive for file history, tap or click it, and then turn on the file history on the screen.

Otherwise, do the following to choose a network drive or external drive that is already connected to your PC.

1. Tap or click the "Start" button.

2. Next, tap or click the "Settings" button.

3. Tap or click the "Update and Security" button.
