How to Transfer your Windows 10 License to a New Computer
Introduction:
If you have an old PC that you no longer use, or that no longer works, it is possible to transfer Windows to a new PC and have a legitimate Windows installation without buying a new license. Of course, as is the case with Microsoft, it is more complicated to transfer Windows than it should be.
What complicates the transfer is that there are different license levels for Windows.
With a Retail license, we can very well transfer Windows, and we will have no problem with the activation on the new PC.
If, however, we had a pre-installed Windows OEM license - which could come with an old laptop, and we wanted to use it for a new custom desktop
- Internet activation will not work. We must activate by phone to transfer Windows successfully.

Find the Windows product key
Before transferring Windows to a new PC, you must know the Windows product key.
If you bought a commercial version of Windows, you will find the product key in the DVD box if you have a physical disk, or possibly in an email if you bought it from an e-commerce site.
For Windows 7 preinstalled on an old PC, you will find the product key on a sticker, usually under a laptop or on the side of the tower, on a desktop computer.
PCs with Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 preinstalled have the product key embedded in the BIOS.

How to modify or remove your Windows 10 license
Delete the license and transfer to another computer
To move a full Windows 10 license or upgrade to a free commercial version of Windows 7 or 8.1, the license can no longer be used on a PC. Windows 10 does not have a disable option. Instead, you have two choices:
• Uninstall the product key
- this is the easiest solution for disabling the Windows license. This method does not inform Microsoft Activation Servers that the license is no longer used on the first PC, instead, it will avoid conflicts if Microsoft's activation servers should detect the license used on multiple systems.
• Format the computer
- this method ensures that the license is no longer used on the computer. You can use the convenient reset option in Windows 10 to do this.
Uninstall the Windows 10 Product Key
Press the Windows + X key, and then click Command Prompt (Admin). At the command prompt, enter the following command:
This command uninstalls the product key, which releases the license for use elsewhere.
