Adobe Reader for Windows or Mac is available in different versions and the most popular versions are Adobe Reader 11 and Adobe Reader DC. Adobe Reader 11 is the conventional reader available for Windows and Mac OS X while Adobe Reader DC is the direct cloud version available for Windows, Mac OS X, iOS and even Android. Protecting a PDF with a password is not a small business and you will have to switch to the built-in features of Adobe Reader.
Here is the step by step guide on how to password protect PDF with Adobe Reader.

Download the latest version of Adobe Reader for Windows or Mac and install it on your computer. You will have to go through the wizard to install it on your computer.

Steps to follow

Step 1. Open the PDF file

Once you have installed Adobe Reader on your computer, open the PDF file you want to protect with a password. You can drag and drop the PDF file into Adobe Reader or directly from the main menu.

1. After opening the PDF file , go to Tools> Protection> Encrypt> Password Protection . The tools are located at the top left of Adobe Reader 11.

2. When the context menu is displayed, click " Yes " on the screen.

3. After enabling security, the next step is to add the password to your PDF file. Write down the password for the PDF file.

4. Now choose compatibility for this selected version of the PDF file.

5. Choose an encryption option:

Encrypt the entire contents of the document
Encrypt content except for metadata
Encrypt attachments: Request a password for opening attachments.

6. Click OK to validate. When prompted for the password, type the password again in the appropriate box and click OK.
