Introduction:
Visual customization of the operating system is important for all users. It is for this purpose, Windows 7 gives the possibility to change the welcome screen that appears when you start your computer. It is easier to do this in Windows 8 and 10, nevertheless, this is a well hidden option in Windows 7.
To set up a custom startup screen for Windows 7, you need to go through two steps.
First, you need to make a registry change that allows customizing the backgrounds, and then you need to save the image you want in a specific Windows folder.
Step One: Enable Custom Backgrounds in Windows 7:
In this step, the goal is to change a single value in the registry, and then put an image file in the required location.
This feature is disabled by default, you can enable it from Registry Editor.
1- Start Registry Editor by clicking Start, type "regedit", and then press Enter.
2- In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >> SOFTWARE >> Microsoft >> Windows >> CurrentVersion Authentication >> LogonUI >> Background
3- In the right pane, you will see a value named OEMBackground. If you do not see this value, you will need to create it by right-clicking under Background, choosing New> DWORD (32 bits), and then naming the new value "OEMBackground"
4- Double-click the OEMBackground value to open the properties window, set its value to 1 in the "Data Value" box, and then click "OK
Step Two: Define a Custom Background Image:
You can use the image you want, while taking into account that the size of the image to use must be less than 256 KB. You will eventually have to convert your image to a JPG format to have this size.
Windows searches for the custom logon background image in the following directory:
C: >> Windows >> System32 >> oobe >> info >> backgrounds
By default, the "info" and "background" folders do not exist, so you'll need to access the "C: WindowsSystem32oobe" folder and create the subfolder yourself.
After creating the folders, copy your desired background image to the "backgrounds" folder and rename the image file "backgroundDefault.jpg. "
The change should take effect immediately, no need to reboot your PC. The first time you disconnect or lock your screen, you will see your new background.
