Introduction:

With Windows 10, you do not have to worry about permissions for your documents, as this is already supported by the operating system. Each user has their own profile and set of permissions, which prevents unauthorized access to files and folders.

However, you may want to manually configure permissions on a set of files or folders to prevent other users from accessing the data. This article assumes that other "people" also have access to the same computer that you are using.

If not, you can simply encrypt your hard drive and that's it. However, when other people can access the computer, such as family or friends, permissions can be helpful.

Of course, there are other alternatives like hiding files and folders using file attributes or using the command prompt to hide the data. You can even hide an entire drive in Windows if you wish.

Before the steps, make sure that you are logged in as an administrator because only administrators are able to change user permissions for files and folders. You will have some system folders, do not change their default permissions as this can cause some difficulties.

How to configure user permissions for files and folders in Windows 10
1. Find the file or folder whose user rights you want to change. Right-click on it when you have found and choose to open its Properties window.

2. Enter the Security tab of the Properties window. There you will see all the names of users or groups with their list of permissions. Click the Edit button to edit the user's permissions.

3. Another window of the permissions of the selected folder will be displayed on the screen. Here, under the User or Group Names segment, choose the account for which you want to make the changes. Then find the Permissions segment where you will find a list of permissions with two zones, Allow and Deny. Give or remove permissions for each operation by selecting the access or Deny check boxes. When done, click Apply and OK.

Permissions are :

Full Control: Giving a green signal to this permission means that users have full access to files and folders. They can see, read and edit.

Modification: Changes to existing files and folders are possible. Create new ones will be prohibited.

Reading and Execution: Here users can view the subject and run programs of available files and folders.

Read: Users can view files, as well as folders, but the execution is not possible with this permission.

Writing: If you own the write permission, you can create a new one and edit the available rights.

Changes will be applied immediately. And if the file or folder in question finds unauthorized access, it will ask the administrator credentials.

These steps secure your important files and folders against unauthorized access.
